BONFIRE Night can prove a real problem for pet owners.

Fireworks cause stress for dogs, which might also put a dampener on your fun.

Fireworks may be fun for humans but it can prove stressful to pets

Website relaxmydog.com makes music and TV to soothe pets. I asked co-founder Amman Ahmed for his tips — and also found some great bargains.

Make a den: Try to limit the sight and sound of fireworks. Amman says: “Close any windows, curtains and doors — this blocks the flashes of the fireworks and dampens the sound of the bangs. You could also create a den and fill it up with some of your pet’s favourite toys.”

MY TIP: Warming toys are always particularly great at soothing, I found the All For Paws Little Buddy Warm Bear for £12.55 at hyperdrug.co.uk, down from £17.99.

Walk in the park: Get any dog walks out of the way before the evening and make them a bit longer than usual. Amman says: “Walking your dog early, for longer and with lots of playtime, ensures they will be nicely tired out and more likely to rest this evening.”

MY TIP: Pick up a ball launcher from Pets At Home for just £2. These are around £6 at most other pet stores.

SAVE: £4

Vital move: Stock up on lots of food, treats and water. Amman says: “Your dog might be too anxious to eat during the fireworks so it’s also best to feed them beforehand. You should also make sure that they have plenty of water to drink.”

MY TIP: Home Bargains has packs of 28 Pedigree DentaStix for £4.75, usually £9.

SAVE: £4.25

Relaxing sounds: Certain sounds can calm pets. Amman says: “Our Bonfire Night music is tried, tested and trusted by millions of dogs and their owners worldwide. The soothing music can be a great way to keep your dog calm during fireworks.”

MY TIP: You can sign up to the service for a 30-day free trial just in time for Bonfire Night. It costs £3.87 per month.
